Dear all

Thank-you for registering for the massive open online course titled Physiotherapy management of spinal cord injuries.

Joanne Glinsky and I are the overall coordinators of this course. You can see who we are and why we run these course here:

http://en-pt.scimooc.org/lesson/1/1/physiotherapy

We are very lucky to be able to offer this years course in 4 additional languages (see bottom for details).

This course starts in two weeks (7th Nov 2022). So we need to tell you a few things.

Some general things to know:

  1. This course is being run through the International Spinal Cord Society (ISCoS)

  2. This course in sponsored by SPIRIT (UK- based Spinal Injuries Charity).

  3. We currently have 14,000 registrants for this course representing more than 130 countries

  4. You will be able to download an electronic certificate from ISCoS when you pass the final assessment (we do not supply verification seals).

  5. You will get to interact with fellow students and clinicians from over 130 countries

  6. And, most importantly you will improve your ability and confidence to manage people with spinal cord injuries. After all that is what we all are primarily interested in.

Some practical things to know:

  1. We will email you each week to remind you about what you need to do

  2. You will need to join our Facebook group where we will discuss interesting things together. To join go here:
    https://www.facebook.com/groups/347425986998568

  3. You need to sign up for www.elearnSCI.org.

  4. You will be given 4 to 6 tasks to complete each week.

  5. You should expect to devote 5 hours in total per week.

  6. You will need to complete a pre-course quiz, a post-course assessment and a course evaluation. You can find the pre-course quiz at:
    http://en-pt.scimooc.org/pre-questionnaire/2

  7. Please do not email us unless it is essential. There are a lot of you and only 2 of us.

Things to do NOW:

  1. Go here and read:
    http://en-pt.scimooc.org/lesson/1/1/physiotherapy

  2. Join the Facebook group:
    https://www.facebook.com/groups/347425986998568

  3. Complete our pre-course quiz. Go here:
    http://en-pt.scimooc.org/pre-questionnaire/2

What to expect:

  1. The online course content on www.elearnSCI,org does not include Jo or I (or anyone else) talking to powerpoint slides over the web. We did not do this for three reasons. First, a lot of you come from countries where your internet connection will be too slow to view video files. Second, it is tedious listening to people talk to powerpoint presentations over the web. Third, listening to people talk is a very passive way of learning. You will learn best if you are required to actively participate and have the freedom to move at your own pace.

  2. To get the most out of the modules on www.elearnSCI.org you need to STOP, THINK and DO what is requested at each stage. If you just skip through the screens quickly without reflecting then you will miss a good learning opportunity.

  3. Do not click on links within the screens of www.elearnSCI.org unless you want to devote more than 5 hours a week to this course. And be warned – if you click on links then you might find it hard to navigate back to where you left of.

  4. The online course will involve interacting with students and physiotherapists that come with many, many different perspectives, backgrounds, levels of understanding, clinical experience and education. In addition, a lot of your colleagues do not speak English as their first language. So, please embrace the experience, always be courteous and polite, and be respectful of each other. If you know more than others, then please contribute and help others.

  5. Jo or I won’t be able to respond to each of your Facebook entries. That is not the purpose of the online discussion. The purpose of the online discussion is for all of you to help and learn from each other. This is in accordance with the principles of adult- and problem-based learning.

We will try our best to make it a great learning experience for everyone but its success will largely depend on each of you actively and enthusiastically participating, and helping us.

We are committed to FREE physiotherapy education for all.
In addition, we believe that a well-educated global community of physiotherapists can together improve the lives of people with spinal cord injuries in all corners of the world.

Best wishes and happy learning from your:
